I know how all the helicopter ‘family’ members feel following the loss of our dear friend Guenter.

I have asked Irina to read out a message from me tomorrow, Saturday, in Minsk.

Here are my words:

“Guenter my old friend, I am going to miss you as will all the members of our helicopter family. You have been and will be remembered as an exceptionally kind hearted, friendly and generous person. I remember the times we met, the pleasure we had in taking a drink together, exchanging views and enjoying your company. The CIG family has had a large piece torn out of its very soul which will be difficult, if not impossible, to fill. The thoughts and feelings of affection go out from all of us to Iryna and Alexander together with all the family members and relatives. I was touched with the words “pilots do not die they pass away into the sky”. I would like to add words of a famous poem written by a pilot who lost his life more than 60 years ago. It is a poem which I treasure and can express your feeling each time you have entertained us.

“Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth

And danced the skies on laughter-covered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

Of sun-split clouds – and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung

Hung in the sunlit silence, Hov’ring there

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air.

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, nor even eagle flew –

And while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high, untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand and touched the face of God.”

Farewell Guenter, look down on all of us knowing that your memory may fade a little but never disappear.

God bless”
